Extraction of the Wichita Fusion Nail after Knee Arthrodesis

To avoid a new exposition and partial damage of a knee arthrodesis site due to the removal of the Wichita fusion nail (WFN), a new extraction technique was developed, using a femoral osteotomy at the proximal end of the nail. Fixing the osteotomy with an Ilizarov frame offered the possibility to perform an additional correction of length and/or alignment if necessary.

Curved Kuntscher nail arthrodesis after failure of knee replacement.

We report the use of long curved Kuntscher nails to maintain stability during arthrodesis of nine infected and five uninfected failures of total knee replacement. The curvature of the nail helps positioning and avoids the need for cortical perforation. A single-stage operation was possible in most cases. Union rates are comparable with those of other series and even patients with delayed union ...

Failure analysis of knee arthrodesis with the WichitaFusion Nail.

Arthrodesis is a salvage procedure for failed total knee arthroplasty with the intent to create a stable, pain-free limb on which to ambulate or transfer. For many patients, the alternative to arthrodesis may be an above-knee amputation. Available techniques for knee arthrodesis include compression plating, external fixators, and intramedullary fixation. The purpose of this study was to report ...

[Arthrodesis without bone fusion with an intramedullary modular nail for revision of infected total knee arthroplasty].

OBJECTIVE To evaluate the outcome of knee fixation without bone fusion using an intramedullary modular nail and interposed cement. MATERIAL AND METHODS Retrospective study of 29 infected total knee arthroplasties with prospective data collection and a mean follow-up of 4.2 years (3-5). RESULTS Complications included 2 recurrent infections, 1 peri-implant fracture, and 1 cortical erosion due...

Knee arthrodesis with interlocking nail after excision of giant cell tumour of the distal femur.

Giant cell tumour of bone occurring around the knee is fairly common and can be difficult to manage. We report a case of such tumour involving the distal femur which was successfully treated with complete excision followed by arthrodesis of the knee with a long interlocking intramedullary nail.
